A much kinder Ben Avery Shooting Facility greeted the 79 contestants in Day 2 action of the Southwest Nationals. Yesterdays windfest for the 600 yard Championship was but a distant memory as clear skies and 4-7 mph breeze's were just enough to keep everybody cooler in the rapidly warming morning.
In the match rifle division local ace shooter Phil Hayes took the overall win for the day with a 784-28X. Second overall was Steven Powell in with a 780-29X. First service and third overall went to Marine Reservist Justin Skaret with a 780-24X. Second service rifle went to Donad Porter. His 779-29X, not only has him fourth overall in the Championship, won him the Master class as well.
During the 200 yard rapid fire match Skaret and 2010 National Service Rifle Champion Eric Swearingen both shot 200-11X's. To break the "unbreakable tie" the pair went back to the 200 yard line at the end of the day and shot one more string as a Shootoff. Skaret prevailed with a 99-3X over Swearingen's 99-2X. I have video of this and several other moments during the day. As soon as I figure out the Youtube end of it, I will upload them to this post.
Stay tuned for more,
RCurtis
